Los Angeles Unified School District Advocates “No Kid Hungry Campaign”

LAUSD Advocates “No Kid Hungry Campaign.”

I’ve just read an article in the LA Times about an elementary school in Compton, CA. There was a kickoff event advocating serving breakfast in classrooms as part of a wonderful “No Kid Hungry Campaign.”

The ultimate goal is getting more students to eat breakfast at school. The city of Compton plans to have all 23 elementary schools taking part by Summer 2011. Since October of 2010, the number of children having breakfast in school has increased from only 110 to 430.

What’s great about this campaign is that there is already funding for this program, meaning they aren’t looking for additional funding, which is great! There’s no need to start a new program, it’s a matter of working with something that’s already in place just a bit differently. In short, it’s about schools making better use of funds already available.

The spokesman for the national No Kid Hungry Campaign has a goal of eliminating childhood hunger by 2015.

It’s an uplifting article that inspires me. We often talk about childhood obesity, but we often don’t address childhood hunger. Unfortunately, it’s more common than we might think, but fortunately, campaigns like this are fighting it and finding real solutions.

I’m most relieved in knowing that it’s a program that already has funding, and it’s simply redirecting dollars. This means it has long term potential, rather than being a short term solution.

Under legislation signed in December by President Obama, school meals will have less sugar, fat and salt, and more whole grains and fruits and vegetables. We are becoming more health conscious as a society, and having healthy snacks in healthy vending machines in schools is something we love!

Health and nutrition are imperative for living a quality life and fortunately we are getting closer to that vision. That’s what inspired me about this article in the LA Times… we are getting closer to a healthy, satiated nation.

Healthy Vending Machines vs. The Junk Food Culture

Our society has become fixated on instant gratification. As a nation, we want everything and we want it now. This certainly applies to what we choose to put in our mouths. In exchange for speed, convenience, and in-expense, we are sacrificing nutrition. But nutrition is the very point of eating!

Healthy Vending Machines combine taste, convenience, and nutrition. They are exactly what we need while we figure out how to adjust our expectations for instant gratification.

Reading is Fundamental (And So is Nutrition)

When I was in college, my favorite book was Once A Runner.

Once A Runner is the tale of Quentin Cassidy, a runner from fictional Southeastern University, who moves to a cabin in the woods in order to focus on his training. He has an upcoming race with the world record holder in the mile and he wants to remove all the distractions from his life so he can train as hard as humanly possible.

I realize that this does not sound like a particularly exciting read but there is a reason that it’s a cult classic among collegiate distance runners. This fantasy of removing everything else from your life so that you can wring every last drop of potential from your body is very powerful to young athletes.

Of course, none of us exist in a vacuum like this. Even our hero Quentin Cassidy started to go a little crazy from the lack of social interaction. We don’t live in a vacuum; we live in the real world.

The American Dream?

And the real world is not conducive to making healthy choices. There are numerous barriers to healthy living in the U.S. The cheapest and most accessible foods are typically the worst things you could eat. Maintaining an active lifestyle is getting harder and harder. And a lot of these barriers are substantially higher for lower income families.

It’s easy to believe that it’s all a matter of choice but it’s not true.   In a vacuum, I’m sure most of us would make much better decisions when it came to nutrition and exercise. But we don’t live in a vacuum, we live in a world with a McDonald’s on every corner and Snickers bars constantly within arm’s length.

The price we pay for convenience

The key to beating the obesity epidemic is going to be making healthy choices easier. We have to make the healthy choice the easy choice instead of the other way around.  It’s going to be about having healthy vending machines in every office building and school and designing neighbourhoods with sidewalks so that people can actually walk and run.

The only way we are going to beat this is by having something healthy within arm’s length and not just that Snickers bar.

Top Secret: What the Fitness Gurus Don’t Want You to Know

I’m going to let you in on a secret.

Which way to Area 51?

This is something that the hordes of fitness and diet gurus don’t want you to understand. Because if you did, they would have a much harder time getting you to part with your money in exchange for their services. Because if you actually understood it, they wouldn’t be able to pretend that they are the kung-fu master who has mastered the one touch death blow.

The secret is that there is no secret. I know, not the most original but it is true. There is no magic workout or food that will transform your body in 2 weeks with minimal effort. Using you body weight as resistance isn’t necessarily better than using free weights. Going on an (insert any food here) diet for a month isn’t the answer to your nutrition problems.

The key to being fit and healthy is exercise and healthy eating. If you burn more calories than you consume, you will lose weight. There have been articles in some high profile magazines recently questioning the value of exercise. Personally, I find these articles socially irresponsible but they do raise a valid point. Exercise has been known to raise hunger levels. If you head over to the nearest Starbucks for a 1000 calorie muffin after a hard session on the treadmill, you probably won’t lose any weight. However, if you head over to a healthy vending machine after your workout for a protein shake you probably will lose weight. It really is that simple.

My Top 7 Rules for a Fit and Healthy Body (Part 2)

Just another Tuesday night game at the Y

4. Do what you love!

Personally, I love running and lifting weights. To me, it’s not just a means to an end; it is the means and the end. I do realize that most people do not share my enthusiasm for these activities.

So what do you love? If you love basketball, then join a basketball league. Get out on the court 3 times a week. The other four days of the week, your workouts will have more meaning because you’re trying to build up your strength and stamina for basketball.

5. Consistency is King!

Do you what to know why crash diets and workouts don’t work? They are not sustainable. If you starve yourself for 8 weeks, of course you’re going to lose weight but you will also gain it right back because you can’t live on 500 calories a day.

You need an exercise and nutrition plan that you can live with day in and day out. Training like a professional athlete for 2 weeks and burning out will not give you the body that you’ve always dreamed of.

6.  You have to make working out and healthy eating a part of your lifestyle!

Healthy choices have to be planned. The path of least resistance is probably a Big Mac.

You have to schedule yourself time to work out instead of hoping that you’ll find the time. You have to know where you are going to find healthy food to eat during the day. That may mean that you pack your lunch or it could mean that you track down the nearest healthy vending machine in your building.

7. It’s Not Going to Be Easy!

Nothing worth having is ever easy. And that’s why fewer and fewer people are fit and healthy.  There are countless challenges to being fit: you are bombarded by ads for fast food, your co-workers will try to lure you to happy hour when you were planning to hit the gym, finding a hotel with a decent gym is practically impossible. You have to resist temptation, stay focused, and get creative with your workouts.

It isn’t easy and you have to accept that. That’s the bad news. The good news is that it can be done and is definitely worth it.

My Top 7 Rules for a Fit and Healthy Body (Part 1)

I caught the fitness bug when I was 14 years old.

Ever since then, running and strength training has been an integral component of my life. Along the way, I have come to realize that there are 7 rules for maintaining a fit and healthy body in our society. There is nothing complicated or technical about these rules. These rules are just a way to view the role that exercise and nutrition should play in your life.

No gravity, no excuses

1. Doing Something is Better Than Doing Nothing!

Let’s say you planned to crank out 5 miles on the treadmill after work. Unfortunately, after yet another crazy day at the office you are wiped out. The thought of running 5 miles is way too daunting. So instead you head home and set up camp on the couch.

Don’t make it an all or nothing game. If you’re too tired to run 5 miles, then run 3 miles instead. Do not be a slave to a program.  Similarly, don’t abandon your nutrition plan because you had a moment of weakness. That chocolate chip cookie isn’t going to make or break you but falling off the wagon and eating a half gallon of ice cream will.

2. A Body in Motion Tends to Stay in Motion!

Over the years, I have learned one universal truth about working out: the hardest part is getting started. Getting my running shoes on is always the hardest  part of my run. Once I’ve got my Nikes laced up and I’m out the door, my body is on-pilot. Once I am in motion, I will stay in motion.

Staying in shape is a lot easier than getting in shape. Getting in shape is the worst. It’s painful, discouraging, and demoralizing. Staying in shape is fun. If you never let yourself get out of shape, you’ve made your life a whole lot easier.

3. Listen to Your Body!

Believe it or not but your body wants to be healthy. Your body was meant to be active; it wasn’t meant to sit 16 hours a day. The problem is that we are bombarded with so much noise, most of us have forgotten how to listen to our bodies.

After a long day, we are mentally exhausted and we confuse that for physical exhaustion. We think that our bodies are craving those peanut butter cups but it’s really the pleasure centers in our brain. Our bodies want us to head over to the healthy vending machine because healthy food will make us feel better. Our bodies want to get out there and break a sweat. You have to re-learn how to listen to your body. It won’t steer you wrong.

Come back tomorrow for Rules 4-7. Same bad time, same bad channel.

Top 5 Reasons You Should Be Stoked About Healthy Food Vending Machines

The winds of change are sweeping through the vending machine industry. Where once your only choice was between grease and sugar, now there are a plethora of healthy options available. I’m stoked about healthy food vending machines and you should be too. Here’s why:

"Looking good Winthrope" "Feeling good Mortimer"

1. Healthy Food Vending Machines are on the frontlines of the war on Childhood Obesity!

Childhood obesity is on the rise and the consequences are worrisome. When we’re young, we are setting the foundation for the rest of our lives. Obese children and adolescents are on a path to become obese adults. And the younger they start on that path, the more severe it will get.

As a school administrator, your influence over your students’ lives is limited. You can’t tell them what to eat but you can control their options. Healthy food vending machines are ideal for schools!

2. You can lower your health care costs and boost employee productivity!

There is a good chance that your company is already spending a great deal of money on a corporate wellness program. Corporate America has recognized that a fit, healthy workforce is more productive, misses less work due to injury or illness, and has substantially lower health care costs. Corporations have been getting extremely in designing incentives to motivate their employees to be healthier.

As long you’re getting creative, how about surrounding your employees with healthy eating options. Work can be stressful and a lot of people deal with that through stress eating. Would you rather have your employees eating a candy bar or a protein bar before the big presentation? Of course, you could always stop working them so hard.

3. Gym-goers want healthy eating options!

Picture this: you’ve just finished a great session at the gym. You ran 4 miles on the treadmill (at 2.5% incline no less) and then you hit the weights. Incline bench press, pull-ups, hack squats, upright rows, and weight dips. You’ve been working hard for the last 90 minutes and it’s time to replenish those muscles. So you head over to the vending machines and grab a…Pepsi and Snickers bar.

Does that sound right to you? Shouldn’t that post-workout snack be a protein shake or a Cliff bar? If you are in the fitness industry, your whole business should be aligned to improving your customers’ health. Healthy vending machines allow you to do that.

4. They look great!

My mother taught me that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. Fortunately, she wasn’t talking about healthy food vending machines.

Do you really want a big, black box in your location? Something that just screams “institutional”? It adds nothing to your location. Just as the food it dispenses adds nothing to your diet.

Option B: you can have an attractive, colorful, state of the art vending machine in your location. Something that grabs people’s attention and piques their interest. Something that screams “cutting-edge”.

5. You’re doing the right thing!

When you have a healthy food  vending machine in your location, you’re sending a message to your employees, students, and customers that you really do care about them. You care enough to provide the highest quality vending food options available.

By getting a healthy food vending machine, you are looking out for your people’s best health. And taking care of your people is always the right thing to do.

The Healthy Vending Machinist or How Batman Got His Groove Back

I have to admit that I have always been fascinated by the way some actors can transform their body for a role.

Chopping wood is an excellent workout

Some transformations that come to mind are Brad Pitt in Troy, Daniel Craig in Casino Royale, and the entire cast in 300. However, there is one body reconstruction that stands above all others: Christian Bale in Batman Begins. And the best part is that the lynchpin of this transformation was healthy food vending machines.

Well, that last part isn’t true but it should be. Because if it was, these transformations could provide some real inspiration that it is possible to transform your body without a celebrity trainer and nutritionist.

How great would it be if Christian Bale had gone from being a 130 lbs. bag of bones in The Machinist to a buff superhero in Batman Begins while working a 9-5 job? What if he had to hit the gym after a long day at the office resisting the myriad of junk food temptations?

“Congratulations on the promotion Gina but I’ll pass on the cake. I’m just going to nosh on these pita chips.”

I have friends who constantly whine that if they were a rich celebrity like Jennifer Aniston, they could also have a perfect body. Let’s level the playing field. Having your Zone Diet meals delivered to your home takes a lot of the guesswork out of making healthy eating choices but it does not mean that you can’t maintain a healthy diet without that service.

Back to our hypothetical situation: Christian Bale, CPA, is at yet another office birthday party. He is trying to pack on 60 lbs. of lean muscle in less than 6 months and his co-workers are encouraging him to stray from his diet. Fortunately, Christian strategically chose to make a trip to the healthy food vending machine before heading over to the conference room. Every time he is offered a piece of cake, Christian points out that he is already snacking on a carrot cake flavored Cliff Bar. And once the party’s over, he’s going straight to the gym. Healthy food vending machines and a gym membership: that’s all you really need.

The Rise of the (Healthy Vending) Machines

I am always hungry

Everyone loves a snack.

I came home earlier today and I was greeted by my two cocker spaniels. Because it was an especially enthusiastic greeting, I decided to give them a snack. Let me tell you, cocker spaniels are an excitable breed and the prospect of a snack sends them into a frenzy. There is just something about a snack that is much more exciting than a regular meal. Whether we’re man or dog, we can’t fight that universal urge to have a snack. What we can do is set ourselves up for success by getting a healthy vending machine snack.

As a devoted pet parent, I carefully monitor my dogs’ diets. When purchasing their snacks, I ensure that the package has the right combination of the words “premium”, “organic”, and Paul Newman’s picture. Unfortunately, the rest of us don’t have the privilege of existing in the controlled environment that is my dogs’ life.

You love my movies and my organic food products

We are surrounded by temptation.  And unlike my dogs, we have the means to indulge ourselves. And what we do we do when we are in the mood for a snack? Do we review our carefully maintained food log and determine whether we should be snacking on a protein or a starch? No, of course not. We grab the most convenient snack available and get on with our lives.

And do these treats typically have that magic combination of keywords and that reassuring picture of Paul Newman? No way! They are more likely to have a picture of a slightly crazed cartoon character.

I am not associated with healthy eating options

What we need is access to healthy snacks. Convenience is king in our society. No one has the time to go on a scavenger hunt for something nutritious when they are on a ten minute break from work or class. Ten minutes is usually just enough time to run down to the nearest vending machine to grab a snack.  Now if that vending machine was stocked with healthy snacks, we would all be in much better shape. Then we could move to our next challenge: getting a solid 18 hours of sleep every day like my dogs do.

A Chicken in Every Pot and a Healthy Vending Machine on Every Corner

Am I the only one who remembers this movie?

I was thinking about running for office in 2012.

Somehow I doubt that I could convince either the Republicans or the Democrats to nominate me so I’d have to start my own political party. I’d call it the Healthy Vending Machines Party. I admit that it is an odd name for a political party but I would be an odd presidential candidate.

My platform would focus on two key issues that are currently on the forefront of our national consciousness: health care and national security.   The genius of my platform is that I know how to strengthen our national defense and lower our ballooning health care costs at the same time.

What is this magic solution? The answer lies in the chosen name of my nascent political party: Healthy Vending Machines.

As the American waistline continues to expand, there are two critical effects. The first is that our national health care costs are skyrocketing.  Health care costs related to obesity are becoming such a concern in Corporate America that it has spawned a billion dollar industry devoted to employee wellness.  Employers pay for the majority of the $2.2 trillion spent on health care every year. They realize that if these costs continue to climb, it will put them out of business.

At the same time that we are getting buried by health care costs, we are becoming too fat to fight. The CDC found that 42% of young adults age 18-24 are overweight or obese. Being overweight is now the number one reason for rejection from the Armed Forces. Combined with criminal records and high school dropout rates, this has led to 75% of the American population being unfit for military service.

We need to make changes to the American lifestyle.  I believe that the simplest solutions are usually the best ones. The simplest solution is this case is to make healthy eating choices are convenient as unhealthy ones. If we can make healthy eating choices easy and available, people will make the right choice.  Healthy vending machines are much more convenient than a trip to the nearest organic supermarket. It’s a simple idea but one whose time has come.
