New Research Shows High Fiber Lowers Lifetime Heart Risk

Northwestern University researchers teamed up with the the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and analyzed data from more than 11,000 people ages 20 and over.

Turns out people who consume more than 22 grams of dietary fiber each day (from fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and beans) were more likely to have a lower lifetime risk for cardiovascular disease.

We’ve known that fiber is pretty important and that’s one of the reasons we have some yummy high fiber snacks in our healthy vending machines. We may not have known just how important it is, but that’s why we love studies and research.

Imagine if your healthy diet prevented you from having heart disease and heart risk! There are times when we all feel too busy to stop and prepare a healthy meal. But if we sacrifice nutrition, then we sacrifice our health and quality of life.

Getting healthy is simply a matter of consciously creating habits of nutrition and exercise. It doesn’t need to be complicated or time consuming. Just another reason we love healthy vending machines, nutritious snacks on the go.

State Agencies to Get More Funding for Fresh Fruits and Veggies in Schools

Just read two articles about the USDA’s announcement that they are putting over a million dollars into the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program.  Both Rueters and The Western Farm Press have strong articles about this new development.

Everywhere I turn, I can’t help but see how healthy snacks are on the rise. It’s exciting to see this shift happening all over and everywhere. It’s no longer just the small group of health conscious earthy-crunchy people. It’s happening in all walks of life, all ages, and all economic classes.

Being in the healthy vending machine business, I can’t help but be ecstatic about this incredible shift. But it’s more than that really. As a whole, our society has been dealing with obesity, diabetes and malnutrition-related diseases for a long time and we see it becoming a bigger issue every day.

It’s not that humans will be forever free of disease by eating right, but it can significantly improve our quality of life and restore millions of people back to health.

The more we choose to consume healthy foods and beverages, the less we’ll crave the junk that poisons our body over time.  I see the younger generations embracing nutrition and showing the older generations how to make the switch from old habits of bad foods to new habits of fresh, healthy, and delicious foods.

Los Angeles Unified School District Advocates “No Kid Hungry Campaign”

I’ve just read an article in the LA Times about an elementary school in Compton, CA. There was a kickoff event advocating serving breakfast in classrooms as part of a wonderful “No Kid Hungry Campaign.”

The ultimate goal is getting more students to eat breakfast at school. The city of Compton plans to have all 23 elementary schools taking part by Summer 2011. Since October of 2010, the number of children having breakfast in school has increased from only 110 to 430.

What’s great about this campaign is that there is already funding for this program, meaning they aren’t looking for additional funding, which is great! There’s no need to start a new program, it’s a matter of working with something that’s already in place just a bit differently. In short, it’s about schools making better use of funds already available.

The spokesman for the national No Kid Hungry Campaign has a goal of eliminating childhood hunger by 2015.

It’s an uplifting article that inspires me. We often talk about childhood obesity, but we often don’t address childhood hunger. Unfortunately, it’s more common than we might think, but fortunately, campaigns like this are fighting it and finding real solutions.

I’m most relieved in knowing that it’s a program that already has funding, and it’s simply redirecting dollars. This means it has long term potential, rather than being a short term solution.

Under legislation signed in December by President Obama, school meals will have less sugar, fat and salt, and more whole grains and fruits and vegetables. We are becoming more health conscious as a society, and having healthy snacks in healthy vending machines in schools is something we love!

Health and nutrition are imperative for living a quality life and fortunately we are getting closer to that vision. That’s what inspired me about this article in the LA Times… we are getting closer to a healthy, satiated nation.

Ms. Obama’s campaign aims to deliver clear, consistent information on these topics and truly educate the public (especially children) in order to eliminate the ignorance that is leading to obesity and its contingent health risks.

A multi-faceted approach to spreading the word about healthy eating ensures everyone will hear. Whether its chefs in the schools, multimedia blitzes, regional Let’s Move Meet-ups, or simple word of mouth, impressing people’s responsibility to pass relevant information to the next generation will help stem the tide of rampant overeating and under-nourishing. Government agencies like the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Food and Drug Administration, and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services all offer information and programs to make Americans healthier, and the Let’s Move campaign encourages health care providers, schools, communities, and parents to get involved as well.

Our society has become fixated on instant gratification. As a nation, we want everything and we want it now. This certainly applies to what we choose to put in our mouths. In exchange for speed, convenience, and in-expense, we are sacrificing nutrition. But nutrition is the very point of eating!

When I was in college, my favorite book was Once A Runner.

Once A Runner is the tale of Quentin Cassidy, a runner from fictional Southeastern University, who moves to a cabin in the woods in order to focus on his training. He has an upcoming race with the world record holder in the mile and he wants to remove all the distractions from his life so he can train as hard as humanly possible.

I realize that this does not sound like a particularly exciting read but there is a reason that it’s a cult classic among collegiate distance runners. This fantasy of removing everything else from your life so that you can wring every last drop of potential from your body is very powerful to young athletes.

Of course, none of us exist in a vacuum like this. Even our hero Quentin Cassidy started to go a little crazy from the lack of social interaction. We don’t live in a vacuum; we live in the real world.

The American Dream?

And the real world is not conducive to making healthy choices. There are numerous barriers to healthy living in the U.S. The cheapest and most accessible foods are typically the worst things you could eat. Maintaining an active lifestyle is getting harder and harder. And a lot of these barriers are substantially higher for lower income families.

It’s easy to believe that it’s all a matter of choice but it’s not true.   In a vacuum, I’m sure most of us would make much better decisions when it came to nutrition and exercise. But we don’t live in a vacuum, we live in a world with a McDonald’s on every corner and Snickers bars constantly within arm’s length.

The price we pay for convenience

The key to beating the obesity epidemic is going to be making healthy choices easier. We have to make the healthy choice the easy choice instead of the other way around.  It’s going to be about having healthy vending machines in every office building and school and designing neighbourhoods with sidewalks so that people can actually walk and run.

The only way we are going to beat this is by having something healthy within arm’s length and not just that Snickers bar.

This is something that the hordes of fitness and diet gurus don’t want you to understand. Because if you did, they would have a much harder time getting you to part with your money in exchange for their services. Because if you actually understood it, they wouldn’t be able to pretend that they are the kung-fu master who has mastered the one touch death blow.

The secret is that there is no secret. I know, not the most original but it is true. There is no magic workout or food that will transform your body in 2 weeks with minimal effort. Using you body weight as resistance isn’t necessarily better than using free weights. Going on an (insert any food here) diet for a month isn’t the answer to your nutrition problems.

The key to being fit and healthy is exercise and healthy eating. If you burn more calories than you consume, you will lose weight. There have been articles in some high profile magazines recently questioning the value of exercise. Personally, I find these articles socially irresponsible but they do raise a valid point. Exercise has been known to raise hunger levels. If you head over to the nearest Starbucks for a 1000 calorie muffin after a hard session on the treadmill, you probably won’t lose any weight. However, if you head over to a healthy vending machine after your workout for a protein shake you probably will lose weight. It really is that simple.
